Taking into account my personal teaching context, what would be the advantages and disadvantages of using the ELP with my groups?
Many people talk about the European Language Portfolio
and it is a document to record the language learning and cultural experiences.
For Primary students, we can find some advantages and disadvantages. We are
going to analyze the skills and problems related to this tool.
On the one hand, the ELP has got many advantages for
this type of students because they can develop their language and intercultural
skills. They are very important for the future of our students because the
learners could travel to other countries to study or work.
In addition, we live in a globalized world and we have to share our lives with other cultures, for this reason, the new generations need to develop the tolerance and respect to live in peace. The ELP contributes to the promotion of democratic citizenship, so our future would be better.
Furthermore,
the ELP encourages the lifelong learning of languages. The students can
evaluate their progress and the motivation increases. The use of Portfolio may
create a system where students set their goals. This system is ideal to
maintain the interest in languages forever.
On the other hand, a teacher could suffer some
problems with the use of the ELP. If we decide to use this document, we will
have to explain its operation. Its use may be difficult, so the teacher should
devote time to its correct application. What is more, some students have got
learning difficulties. This situation could create psychological problems
because these students do not reach the established objectives and their
classmates reach them.
Finally, if we were the managers of languages in a
school, we would use the ELP. It offers us many possibilities to develop the
language skills, they are essential to find a job. However, we should apply
certain measures to overcome the disadvantages. A teacher could create a big problem.
