If you were not limited by the demands of the national/regional curriculum, what would you say is the most important thing you would teach your students about your subject (in a CLIL context)? How would you assess their learning?
The Valencian curriculum is our reference to
teach in this Community. In this document, we can find the curricular elements for
Primary Education classified by courses, so we have to work following this.
Probably, many teachers think that this selection is not good and they would
work other aspects of the subjects in their CLIL units.
Firstly, we would add contents related to the
units of measurement used in other countries. Our curriculum says that students
must measure using the meter (including multiples and submultiples). It would
be interesting to use units like feet, miles and inches. They are used in the
United States and the United Kingdom, the main countries where students travel
to learn English. For this reason, we think it is essential to teach this type
of units of measurement in CLIL units. If we were the minister of Education, we
would include these units. In addition, it is useful because it would bring us
closer to the culture of those countries.
Secondly, this official document talks about
the road safety in Spain. The previous foreign countries have got different
rules and when we travel, we must abide by them. The ignorance of these
contents can create serious problems, for this reason, our government should
expand the curriculum.
Thirdly, it is very important to assess these
contents, so we should establish assessment criteria and indicators of
achievement. Furthermore, we will use evaluation techniques and instruments
like observation (anecdotal records, class diary or attitude scales) or
performance analysis (portfolio, rubrics or checklists). We should pay
attention to this part of the teaching process because we can make the
appropriate changes.
Finally, these new contents and ways to
evaluate would be ideal for students to travel around the world. What is more,
the CLIL units would create a global culture and they would increase their
autonomy.
